Your mom HATES cliche Mothersday Cards + The 5 Minute Formula for a Meaningful Mother's Day Card Message

You stare blankly at the greeting card for 5 minutes,

then scribble, “thanks for being such a great Mom!”

Or worse,

you write nothing.

You just sign your name below the corny card greeting that 10,000 other moms are getting.

And then you justify it.

She knows you love her.

You got her that cheese grater she wanted, so it’s ok you can’t think of anything to say.

Well I’ve got some brutal news for you.

When I asked my personal page what their favorite Mothersday Gift of all time was?

An ongoing theme was “Letters from my kids.”

Because it’s how you make her feel, not what you buy that matters.

And frankly, moms aren’t ever going to ask for what they really want – for you to make them feel appreciated, like they’re a good mom.

Because asking for that would be kinda weird, right?

But I’ve got you covered.

I’m going to teach you my 5-minute formula for writing a card message that will make your Mom feel great, and at the end I’ll even give you a bonus idea for taking it one step further.

The 5 Minute Formula for a Meaningful Mother’s Day Card Message

Step 1: Get specific.

When you aren’t specific, you can’t think of anything to say.
And “I appreciate you” doesn’t mean crap if you don’t say what you appreciate her FOR.

Let me give you an example from the book “Made to Stick”.

Take 10 seconds, and think of as many things in this world that are white. OK. Done? Great.

Now take another 10 seconds, and think of as many white things you can that are in your refrigerator. It was probably much easier to think of white things in your refrigerator because you had less options to take from. It’s the same when you’re trying to think of a compliment for your mother.

So get specific, and answer 1 or 2 of the questions below:

When you were a child, what did your mom always do for you when you were sick (my mom made red Jello and let us drink 7up):

In the past year, how did your mom help you when you were in a bind? Did she babysit your kids last minute? Send you a copy of your favorite recipe that you had to have made for the bake sale that night?

What annoying thing or habit do you always do that your mom puts up with?

What life lessons has your mom taught you? Has she taught you how to cook a Thanksgiving meal? That family comes before work? Or that flipping off the guy that cut you off is OK so long as he’s from out of state?

What is one of your favorite childhood memories with your Mother? Was it a specific family vacation? Or how she would spend an hour every Saturday teaching you how to read?

Step 2:

Pick 1-2 of your favorite answers above, and make it into your Mother’s Day Card Message.

Step 3:

Save your answers as a word doc, and use the rest of your answers for the year to come, for things like her Birthday, Grandparents day, or just a nice little note to send her when she’s had a bad day.

Now that you’ve written such a thoughtful, heart-warming message for your mom, it doesn’t even matter what card you pickup at Wal-Mart.
